Stan Wawrinka reconnaît avoir été « just sad not to be able to say goodbye to New York » avant d’apprendre la bonne nouvelle : il disputera finalement l’US Open.
La sélection de Wawrinka pour une invitation à l’US Open a connu plusieurs rebondissements. Après ne pas avoir figuré sur la première liste de wild-cards, le Suisse, qui prendra bientôt sa retraite, n’a pas non plus obtenu l’une des deux dernières invitations. Les organisateurs leur ont finalement préféré les joueurs locaux Darwin Blanch et Patrick Kypson.
La réaction du public a été vive, tandis que le tournoi a essuyé de nombreuses critiques. Alors que tout le monde pensait que Wawrinka, actuellement 127e mondial, ne pourrait pas disputer son dernier tournoi du Grand Chelem à l’US Open, les organisateurs ont annoncé le forfait de Kypson, blessé. La wild-card est alors revenue au Suisse.

Wawrinka : il était simplement triste de ne pas pouvoir dire au revoir à New York et à l’US Open
Interrogé par les médias lors de sa conférence de presse d’avant-tournoi, Wawrinka a reconnu avoir été déçu après ne pas avoir reçu de wild-card dans un premier temps. L’ancien numéro 3 mondial a toutefois insisté : même s’il n’avait finalement pas obtenu cette invitation, il aurait respecté la décision du tournoi.
Wawrinka a décrit l’ensemble de la situation comme « a rollercoaster », avant d’ajouter : “At the end of the day, I always said that the only way to be sure to play a tournament, you have to be the right ranking. I knew I wasn’t on the list directly. So I was hoping for a wildcard. But I also know that wildcards are not granted. So it was not a problem for me not to have it. I was just sad not to be able to say goodbye to New York and to the US Open. »

Comme indiqué précédemment, Wawrinka a appris en milieu de semaine qu’il pourrait finalement participer au tournoi de Flushing Meadows.
“And I got the call, I think, Wednesday night or Wednesday afternoon when I was in the Swiss mountains. So, of course, I was happy and I had to quickly organize to be back here, » a confié le vainqueur de l’US Open 2016.
Wawrinka affrontera par ailleurs Matteo Berrettini au premier tour de l’US Open. Les deux hommes s’étaient déjà retrouvés au premier tour de Wimbledon, où l’Italien s’était imposé au terme d’un intense match en cinq sets.
