Matteo Berrettini a rendu un bel hommage à la « légende » Stan Wawrinka après leur match à l’US Open. L’Italien a également raconté une anecdote datant du jour où il avait perdu un set d’entraînement face au Suisse, avant de devoir lui offrir une bouteille de vin.
Bénéficiaire d’une invitation de dernière minute pour disputer sa dernière apparition en Grand Chelem à Flushing Meadows, le Suisse de 41 ans, actuellement 127e mondial, affrontait pour la deuxième fois consécutive en Majeur l’Italien, 43e au classement ATP.
Après avoir rivalisé avec Berrettini au cours des deux premiers sets, Wawrinka a finalement manqué de ressources. Le champion de l’US Open 2016 a cédé après avoir été mené deux manches à zéro, permettant à l’Italien de s’imposer 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-0.
Les deux hommes s’étaient déjà affrontés au premier tour de Wimbledon, deux mois plus tôt. Le match s’était conclu en cinq sets, mais Berrettini avait une nouvelle fois eu le dernier mot.

Quelques instants après avoir mis un terme à la carrière de Wawrinka en Grand Chelem, l’Italien de 30 ans a adressé un message particulièrement élégant au Suisse, qui prendra sa retraite.
« Delighted to share the court against this legend of our sport once again. I’ve said it many times… I was a kid when I was watching him playing, winning Slams. It’s a dream coming true », a déclaré Berrettini.
« It’s crazy we never played against each other in our career, and then twice in a row in two Slams first round. You guys gave us an unbelievable atmosphere as he deserves. I’m happy for the win, and I’m honored to share the court with a great player like him. »

Après ce vibrant hommage à Wawrinka, Berrettini a également évoqué une ancienne défaite face au Suisse, qui lui avait valu de lui offrir une bouteille de vin.
« We definitely have a good relationship. I also got him a bottle of wine once because I lost a set in Monaco, we were training. We bet a bottle of wine. I gave it to him. That’s why he’s smiling », a ajouté l’Italien.
