Carlos Alcaraz abordait l’US Open 2026 avec de nombreuses interrogations, mais après deux matches, plusieurs anciens joueurs estiment déjà que l’Espagnol peut devenir l’homme à battre à New York.
Âgé de 23 ans, le septuple vainqueur en Grand Chelem a retrouvé la compétition en simple après 139 jours d’absence en raison d’une blessure au poignet. Pour son retour, il s’est imposé 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 face à Roman Safiullin, avant de devoir batailler davantage au deuxième tour contre Jaime Faria.
Alcaraz a perdu le premier set 6-4 face au Portugais, mais sa réaction a été immédiate. Le tenant du titre a remporté 18 des 23 jeux suivants pour finalement s’imposer 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 et rejoindre le troisième tour.
Harrison et Murray voient Alcaraz comme le favori
La manière dont il a conclu cette rencontre a suffi à faire revoir ses ambitions à la hausse à Ryan Harrison.
“I’m even more confident now that he’s going to win the title than I have been at any point in time throughout this tournament,” Harrison said on Sky Sports.
“Because he’s now lasted four sets, he’s played his first-round and his second-round match. He responded to the match competition after the opening match, and he got through four sets.
And it felt like last night he really, really hit his stride in the middle of that match. So looking at Carlos and the way that he played, especially after that first set, I think it’s expected that he would have a little bit of a rust at some point.
But when he’s playing his best and he hits his stride there, I’m very confident of the form that he’s playing right now.”
Jamie Murray a lui aussi désigné Alcaraz comme le vainqueur du tournoi. L’ancien numéro un mondial du double a toutefois souligné l’importance, pour l’Espagnol, de franchir les premiers tours après une si longue coupure.
“Well, I like that Ryan picked him to win the tournament. I did too.
I’d say, for me, if he gets through the first week, I think he becomes a big favourite for the tournament because he’ll have three matches under his belt.
He won’t stop talking about his rest and his fitness and stuff. But if he came back and finished the match really strong, I think he only lost one point on his serve in the third set, I’m sure he’s pretty excited for his games after such a long hiatus.”
De son côté, Alcaraz s’est montré plus prudent au moment d’évoquer ce tournoi du Grand Chelem. Avant le début de l’US Open, le septuple lauréat en Grand Chelem avait expliqué devoir faire confiance à son poignet et chasser la peur de son esprit.
Après sa victoire contre Safiullin, Carlos a reconnu que même sa routine habituelle le jour d’un match lui semblait inhabituelle, puisqu’il n’avait plus disputé de rencontre en simple depuis plus de quatre mois.
“I kind of forgot what match day looks like. I didn’t actually remember what I used to do in the warm-up. That’s why I was really nervous, because I just kind of forgot the competition,” Alcaraz said.
La principale satisfaction est venue de son poignet, qui ne lui a causé aucune douleur pendant la rencontre.
“I felt great. I don’t know how it looked from outside, but from inside, my feeling was that I was hitting normal. I was playing pretty normal, playing my style. The arm, the wrist, everything felt great. I’m just really happy it’s pain-free finally.”
Alcaraz veut progresser match après match
Face à Faria, Alcaraz a dû disputer un quatrième set, ce qui lui a enfin permis de jouer un match plus long après plusieurs mois sans compétition en simple.
L’Espagnol a expliqué que les moments difficiles et la pression lui avaient finalement manqué durant son éloignement des courts.
“I missed the nerves, the pressure, the tense and difficult moments, and the challenge of figuring out how to handle them,” he said.
Alcaraz a également insisté sur le fait qu’il ne souhaitait pas regarder trop loin devant lui.
“Right now, I don’t have expectations beyond trying to remain as healthy as possible and finishing the tournament healthy, regardless of how far I go,” he said.
Rick Macci est un autre observateur convaincu qu’Alcaraz a déjà dépassé les attentes. L’ancien entraîneur de Serena Williams estime que l’Espagnol est un joueur à part, lui qui a effectué son retour directement en Grand Chelem après 139 jours d’absence.
“Carlos has already exceeded expectations.
“Playing matches in tournament combat let alone a grand slam street fight 3 out of 5 with no pre game warm up is a different animal.
But the Spanish Cheetah is a different animal. He is an anomaly, playing Monopoly and landing on Broadway in New York to perform.”
De tels éloges, venant de figures importantes du tennis, comptent forcément pour Carlos, qui possède déjà une grande confiance en ses capacités.
Alcaraz affrontera désormais Wu Yibing au troisième tour. Le Chinois n’a pas encore perdu le moindre set depuis le début du tournoi, tandis que Carlos avait remporté leur unique confrontation précédente, au Masters de Shanghai 2024.
