Arthur Fery ne manque pas de confiance avant son retour à la compétition. Révélation de Wimbledon, le Britannique est désormais encore plus convaincu d’avoir les armes pour rivaliser avec les meilleurs joueurs du circuit.
Au début du tournoi de Wimbledon cette année, le joueur britannique, alors classé au 114e rang mondial, avait intégré le tableau principal grâce à une invitation.
Il a finalement signé un parcours remarquable, remportant cinq matches — notamment face à l’ancien numéro 3 mondial Grigor Dimitrov et à Flavio Cobolli, finaliste de Roland-Garros cette année — pour atteindre la première demi-finale de Grand Chelem de sa carrière.
À 24 ans, Fery est ainsi devenu le premier joueur depuis Goran Ivanisevic, en 2001, à atteindre les demi-finales de Wimbledon en tant que wild-card. Il est également le premier Britannique depuis Andy Murray, en 2016, à se hisser dans le dernier carré sur les courts du All England Club.
Fery : « I’m looking forward to competing only on the main level »
Après son superbe parcours à Wimbledon, Fery a gagné 78 places au classement et atteint le meilleur classement de sa carrière, au 36e rang mondial.
Le Britannique a ainsi intégré directement le tableau principal d’un Masters pour la première fois de sa carrière. Tête de série n° 32 à Cincinnati, il bénéficie même d’une exemption au premier tour.
« It’s the first time that I’ve broken through like that and I’m going to be able to play only tour events, so I’m looking forward to that, » a déclaré Fery avant ses débuts dans le tableau principal à Cincinnati.
Fery : « I was always confident that I could play with top players »
Fery affirme qu’il était déjà convaincu de pouvoir rivaliser avec les meilleurs. Mais sa percée à Wimbledon et son nouveau classement lui ont apporté une preuve supplémentaire qu’il avait sa place à ce niveau.
« I was always confident that I could play with top players. But yeah, now having the ranking to back it up is really great. And obviously you’re playing great players week in, week out, so it’s difficult, » a ajouté le 36e mondial.
« It’s a difficult sport with fine margins, so you’ve got to have a lot of self-belief. I think it comes from just proving to myself that I have beaten top players and if I do the right things and train well, I feel good on court when I’m with those top guys. »
Après son exemption au premier tour, Fery affrontera au deuxième tour du tournoi de Cincinnati James Duckworth ou un joueur issu des qualifications.
